A lot of people like to braid their horse's mane, it looks good and it helps to keep the hair healthy.
It can however be a challenge to braid the mane if your horse is not comfortable having it done.
There are however ways that you can make the process easier for your horse, especially in the early days.

The whole process of braiding your horse's mane will go a lot smoother if the hair is clean and not full of tangles.
It is usually a good idea to wash the hair a few days before you braid it.
You are going to want to do this a few days before you start braiding so that the hair is completely dry before you start, working with wet hair is not easy.
If there are a lot of tangles in the hair you may want to use conditioner when you wash it, just make sure to not use too much.
When it comes time to actually start braiding the hair you are going to need to get the horse to stand still.
That means that you are going to have to tie him up pretty tightly.
Clearly this can make the horse nervous, especially if it is the first time that you have braided his hair.
Make an effort to reassure your horse and to keep him calm while you are tying him up and while you are braiding the hair.
It is also generally a good idea to provide hay or oats to give the horse something to do.
When you are first learning how to braid your horse's hair it will take you a fair amount of time to get the job done, at least a couple of hours.
Expecting the horse to remain still for that long is not realistic so it is often a good idea to take breaks in the process.
When you braid the mane you normally divide it into sections anyway, when you have finished braiding a couple of sections take a break and give the horse a chance to walk around.
After you have done it a few times you will be much faster and your horse will be more comfortable with getting his hair braided.
