Super Bowl 44 Alternate Point Spreads

One of the great things about betting on the Super Bowl is that if you don't like the point spread, you can simply find one that you do like. Nearly every sportsbook will offer what are known as alternate point spreads.

Alternate point spreads are essentially different point spreads than the primary lines used for a game and can be found for both sides and totals wagers on the Super Bowl.


But instead of laying the traditional -110 for straight wagers, bettors are asked to risk considerably more if they move the point spread in their favor, or bettors can take better odds if they move the line the other way.

The point spread for the Super Bowl is currently:
Indianapolis -5.5 over New Orleans
Over/Under 56.5

Bettors taking Indianapolis -5.5 points over the Arizona need the Steelers to win by six or more points to win their bets, while those taking New Orleans +5.5 need the Saints to lose by five or fewer points, or to win the game, in order to win their wagers.

Bettors wagering on the over/under are betting the combined score of both teams will exceed 56.5 points or come in under 56.5 points. In both cases, bettors are asked to risk $11 to win $10 on either the point spread bet (Indianapolis or New Orleans) as well as the over/under.

But alternate point spread bettors can be asked to risk as much as $100 to win $10 or they can risk $10 to win $70 depending on the bet they make.

Summary

The alternate point spreads can be used in two different manners. Those bettors who don't have a strong opinion on the game, may want to make a token wager and have the favorable point spread in their favor. Those who have a strong opinion on the game may want to take the short end of the official point spread to try and make a bit more money than they would be simply betting against the point spread.
