    • 1). Meet the age requirements. The Villages is a retirement community and regulations state that one of the home's occupants must be age 55 or over. While a younger spouse or roommate may live with the older occupant, those under 19 may only stay for a period no longer than 30 consecutive days.

    • 2). Pick the area of the Villages where you want to live. The community is made up of several different subdivisions or villages, each with access to both the Spanish Springs and Lake Sumter Springs Town Centers, restaurants, recreation and shops. As of 2011, living options include building your own home or purchasing a pre-owned property.

    • 3). Buy a golf cart, which is a major form of transportation in the Villages. Multipurpose cart and walking paths lead to the residential, recreational and commercial areas of the community as well as to the golf courses, lessening the need to travel by car.
