    • 1). Be firm with your expectations. Clearly state the boundaries expected of your son and make clear to him what will not be tolerated. Rules of behavior are necessary whether your son is a toddler or a pre-teen. Ask your child to repeat your instructions to ensure that he heard and understood you.

    • 2). React immediately to any instances of disobedience. Give your son immediate feedback on their behavior both good and bad. Give him a time out if the situation and environment allow it. A younger child may sit in a chair for a specified amount of time, while an older child should be sent to a room with no distractions. Be specific when telling the child why he is being punished, and determine ahead of time how long he should be isolated.

    • 3). Remove all privileges and distractions including video games, cell phone, movies and outings with his friends until he displays proper behavior. Slowly return the items and privileges with continued obedience. Your son will understandably be frustrated and angry, but it is important to remain firm until your he recognizes that you are serious and your rules must be followed.

    • 4). Maintain control of the situation. It is important that your son sees you as an authority figure. A teenager may act up[ in order to test your boundaries. Choose your battles, and allow your son to make some of his own decisions. You may allow him the freedom to go out with friends, but he should know if he needs to check in with you at a certain time and what time you expect him home.
