Becoming debt free IS possible.
Even though in some situations, it seems completely out of reach, if you are smart with your finances, you can do it.
A Few Ways To Be Smart:
  • Don't ignore your debt, this will only dig the hole deeper.
  • Don't overspend.
Set personal boundaries for essential spending.
  • Generate more income.
  • Manage your credit cards as efficiently as you can.
  • Budget your money.
Being money smart is simple, but it's not easy.
Now you know what you need to do, but you may need some help on just how to do it.
Don't Ignore Your Debt You've already done the first step by reading this article! So you're well on your way.
You can do this.
Don't Overspend That's a simple statement, pretty clear.
But it's more easily said than done.
Here are some suggestions:
  • Start by making small cuts in your expenses.
Only go out to eat once a week instead of twice.
Or if you're really motivated, don't go out to eat at all!
  • Carpool or take the bus instead of driving.
  • Shop at thrift stores.
    (Gasp!) Give it a try.
You may find that it's not that bad.
And you can find some really good bargains.
  • Buy store brand groceries.
  • Buy in bulk.
  • Junk food is really expensive.
Do you really need it? It's bad for you anyway.
  • Cancel subscriptions to magazines you no longer read.
  • Do you really need that new dress?
  • Do you need to take the whole family to the movies or can you wait until it comes out on DVD?
  • Trade in that giant SUV for something more practical.
Maybe you've been resisting it, but it may be the time to do it.
Generate More Income Who doesn't want more income? But, realistically, it can be done.
If there is no possibility of advancement in your job, could you look for another one which better uses your skills and pays more? That's a big decision and requires a lot of motivation and work.
But we already know you are motivated.
Another option which may be more feasible is to take a second, part time job.
Even one a job that is really part time, that is, only a few hours a week, can help a surprising amount.
But be sure to put ALL that income toward paying off your debt.
Manage Your Credit Cards This is again simple, but hard to do.
Make this a hard and fast rule: If you can't pay your bill in full at the end of every month, cut up the cards and do not use them! That way, you won't spend money you don't have and get even deeper into debt.
Budget Your Money When it comes to budgeting, the more in debt you are, the tighter your budget should be.
When creating a budget, there are a few key steps to ensure the budget is laid out correctly.
First, list all your income sources -- include everything -- your paycheck, child support check, alimony, tips, etc.
Next, add all expenses -- groceries, gas, auto insurance, mortgage, electric bill, clothes, entertainment, etc.
Separate the essential expenses from the optional ones.
To do this accurately, you may need to write down EVERYTHING you spend for one month and then analyze it.
Be aware of bills which come every other month or do not come regularly.
Now you have two lists that can be compared, dollar amount to dollar amount.
This might just be enough to stun your brain and realize where all your money actually goes.
Be willing to make adjustments! You're in debt for a reason -- your expenses obviously outweigh your income.
There are only two ways to adjust the equation, and we've already talked about them:
  1. Lower your expenses
  2. Make more money
The bottom line is that the only way to get rid of some debt is to be knowledgeable about how to get out of it.
Be smart.
You can do it.
