    • 1). Draw a circle on a piece of cardboard or card stock using a pencil. The circle should be just barely larger than the hole the cat ripped in the carpet.

    • 2). Cut out the circle with a pair of scissors. This is your template.

    • 3). Lay the template on top of the damaged portion of carpet; it should cover the rip or tear completely.

    • 4). Hold down the template firmly with one hand and cut the carpet around the template using a utility knife or a carpet knife. Spread the carpet fibers apart so your cut is made cleanly. Remove the piece of cut carpet.

    • 5). Vacuum the area or otherwise pick up any carpet debris. This allows you to fix the patch in place cleanly.

    • 6). Cut a carpet patch using the paper template and the utility knife or carpet knife. Cut the patch from a carpet remnant or from an unnoticeable location, like the inside of a closet, under a radiator or underneath a heavy piece of furniture. Cut the carpet so the pile of the patch matches the pile of the area you'll be fixing.

    • 7). Push the patch into the hole in the carpet area you're fixing to ensure it's a good fit. Remove the carpet patch and trim it if necessary.

    • 8). Spread carpet glue on the bottom of the patch and around the edge of the backing.

    • 9). Push the patch into the hole and line it up so the fit is snug. Place a heavy object on the patch to weigh it down while the glue dries. Let the glue dry overnight.

Comb the fibers of the carpet patch and the carpet surrounding it together, using a comb or a fork.
