How to Fix Carpet Ruined by a Cat
- 1). Draw a circle on a piece of cardboard or card stock using a pencil. The circle should be just barely larger than the hole the cat ripped in the carpet.
- 2). Cut out the circle with a pair of scissors. This is your template.
- 3). Lay the template on top of the damaged portion of carpet; it should cover the rip or tear completely.
- 4). Hold down the template firmly with one hand and cut the carpet around the template using a utility knife or a carpet knife. Spread the carpet fibers apart so your cut is made cleanly. Remove the piece of cut carpet.
- 5). Vacuum the area or otherwise pick up any carpet debris. This allows you to fix the patch in place cleanly.
- 6). Cut a carpet patch using the paper template and the utility knife or carpet knife. Cut the patch from a carpet remnant or from an unnoticeable location, like the inside of a closet, under a radiator or underneath a heavy piece of furniture. Cut the carpet so the pile of the patch matches the pile of the area you'll be fixing.
- 7). Push the patch into the hole in the carpet area you're fixing to ensure it's a good fit. Remove the carpet patch and trim it if necessary.
- 8). Spread carpet glue on the bottom of the patch and around the edge of the backing.
- 9). Push the patch into the hole and line it up so the fit is snug. Place a heavy object on the patch to weigh it down while the glue dries. Let the glue dry overnight.
- 10
Comb the fibers of the carpet patch and the carpet surrounding it together, using a comb or a fork.
