What to Know Before Renting a Limo
- When you're getting estimates, tell the rental company what kind of night you're planning to have and how many people will be riding in the limousine. Companies with larger fleets and a wider variety of cars will help you select one appropriate to the occasion (most people don't want to show up to their wedding in a stretch Humvee). You'll also need to tell them when you want to be picked up and when you'll leave, as many limousine drivers are paid by the hour.
Also, to save money, choose one central location for pick-up and drop-off. Limousine companies generally charge more if they have to take people to multiple destinations. - Each limousine company has its own system of pricing. While most are based on hourly rates, some include "hidden" fees such as fuel surcharges or costs for other services. You may also receive a quote that is based on a flat rate. When you get an estimate, make sure you understand exactly what they're promising to provide, and don't be afraid to ask if it is possible for additional charges to pop up. A uniform comparison will make it easier for you to choose a company.
Also, remember to factor in the tip to the driver. It is customary to tip 20 percent of the base price (or more, especially for outstanding service). Check to see whether the company has included the driver tip in the base price. - Most limousine companies are legitimate, but just as there are freelance cabs wandering the streets of every major American city, there are also amateur limousine drivers looking to make a quick buck by offering cut rates. Be sure that the company you choose is registered in good standing with the state and is properly insured and licensed. If you ask to see the company's credentials and they can't show them right away, there's a good chance the company is not legitimate.
- Limousine companies are in high demand at certain times of the year: spring for the prom, fall for homecoming and all summer for weddings. If you're planning to rent a limo during one of these busy times, you may have to schedule the service weeks or even months in advance to get what you want at the price you need.
