Use Ear Drops Correctly to Get Rid of Ear Infections for Good
Updated October 30, 2014.
If you have a bad case of Swimmer's Ear that you just can't seem to get rid of, or if you have recurring Swimmer's ear, you may consider that you're not using your ear drops correctly. Antibiotic ear drops are the treatment of choice for Swimmer's ear, (otitis externa), and more rarely used for middle ear infections, however, if they are not used correctly they won't work. Like all antibiotics the entire course of the medication must be used to avoid creating antibiotic resistant super bugs, however, when using ear drops just finishing the course might not be enough.
Ear drops must be given in the correct manner so that they coat the entire ear canal and remain inside of the ear for an appropriate amount of time. In children it is necessary to pull the ear lobe out and down to straighten out the auditory tube, in adults it is necessary to pull the ear lobe out and up. If you have questions about how to use antibiotic, or any ear drops you may wish to read How to Use Ear Drops Correctly for step by step instructions as well as important information about precautions and side effects.
