Identification of Toxic Neuropathies: Cardinal Tenets

Prevention

The primary method for preventing occupational toxic neuropathy is to limit exposure to toxic substances in the workplace. Key components include ensuring adequate ventilation in the work place, use of protective clothing including gloves and respirators and disrobing potentially contaminated work clothes upon leaving the work place. Although multiple substances have been investigated as protective agents against the development of a TxPN after chemotherapy administration, few have proven efficacious. There was hope that vitamin E may prove to be a helpful protective agent as suggested in a small trial, but the benefit was not evident in a subsequent larger study. There is some indication that the administration of intravenous calcium and magnesium may minimize the onset and severity of cisplatinum induced neuropathy. Many other agents have been tested but few have shown benefit to date.
