Are you a mouth breather? Do you wake up in the morning with a dry throat and mouth? Are you also a snorer? These common issues are usually linked and your partner will probably spend large periods of night time going nuts listening to the snoring. The debilitating tiredness caused by lack of sleep is a real problem for the partners of snorers. I cured my snoring using a cheap device called a 'snoring chin strap'

The Problem

Mouth breathing is very common amongst snorers. A blocked nose or a structural defect in the nose, caused for example by a sporting injury in earlier life can make breathing through the nose virtually impossible for many people. Allergies can cause the same issue and snoring often increases during the hay fever season. This open mouth breathing is what generally causes people to snore.

Is there a Solution?

There are a range of devices that can help with snoring problems. Anti Snoring Mouthpieces are worn in the mouth to keep the airway clear, and prevent the vibration of soft tissues which causes snoring. Another useful device, which is far less invasive but may well cure your snoring is the Snoring Chin Strap. This is a very simple device which is worn over the head, with a cradle that goes under the chin and holds the mouth closed at night. Now, if you have a blocked nose or structural problem, you need to get that fixed, and a mouthpiece may serve you better. But for many, mouth breathing has become a habit, and the chin strap for snoring can instantly resolve this problem by ensuring you breath through your nose at night.

Yes, the chin strap looks a little odd when worn, but the benefits far outweigh that minor disadvantage. You getting a good nights sleep without being constantly kicked is a real benefit. Your partner will appreciate it too.

Using snoring chin straps can in fact provide more benefits that just a snoring cure. It is possible that you may have Sleep Apnea which is a more serious condition in which 'episodes' of breath holding take place whilst asleep, the sleeper typically stops breathing for 10 seconds or more. This condition can cause some more serious health issues, and if you are concerned about it, you really should contact your doctor and consider have a sleep test to confirm the condition. The upside is that in some cases, it can be a learned condition which can be corrected.

The fantastic benefit of chin straps for snoring is that they teach you (although you are asleep) to breath through your nose. Mouth breathers tend to get a narrowing of the airway, which causes the soft mouth and throat tissues to vibrate, causing a snore. The snoring chin strap will keep the mouth closed and the jaw in a position that assists in keeping that airway open.

If you wear the 'stop snoring chin strap' for a while, consider trying the odd night without it to see if you have automatically learnt to breath through your nose at night. A partner will be able to advise you. If not, keep using it and the time will come when it is no longer needed. I found it only took me a few weeks before I was converted from a mouth breather to a nose breather, and more significantly, from a snorer to a non-snorer.
