Those travelling to Hong Kong to watch the 56th HK Open golf tournament on from October 16 to 19, 2014 need not necessarily book downtown accommodation. Venue for the tournament is in the New Territories area, which boasts some nice Hong Kong serviced apartments and hotels.

That's not to say the HK Golf Club in Fanling isn't as easily accessible from Tsim Sha Tsui, Central and other central areas. The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) covers much of HK and its Sheung Shui station is not far from the club. A complimentary shuttle bus will be operating to the club from the station, departing every half hour between 7 am and 6 pm on the Thursday and Friday and every 15 minutes from 8 am to 7.30 pm on the Saturday and Sunday.

Those choosing a serviced apartment for their accommodation in HK will typically find a comparable level of room, comfort and facilities to what they would find at a conventional hotel. A good example is The Bay Bridge Hong Kong Hotel & Serviced Apartments on the Tsuen Wan coastline in the New Territories, near the iconic Tsing Ma Bridge that connects Lantau Island and HK International Airport on neighbouring Chek Lap Kok island to the rest of HK.

Just like a hotel, this particular Hong Kong serviced apartment offers a choice of different room categories ranging from the 440-460 sq ft Studio to the 800 sq ft 1 Bedroom With Terrace. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, boutique restaurant, laundry and ironing room and complimentary in-room Wi-Fi internet access.

Those guests in town for the HK Open will find the Tsuen Wan MTR station a few minutes' drive from the property, which runs a daily complimentary shuttle bus between the two points. Similarly, a good number of hotels and serviced apartments in HK are conveniently situated to the MTR.

The Big Easy - four time Major Champion Ernie Els - has confirmed his participation at this year's Hong Kong Open for the first time and will celebrate his 45th birthday on the Friday. Joining the South African will be four time HK Open winner Miguel Angel Jimenez who will be aiming to win the tournament for an unprecedented third time in a row.

Fellow Major Champion Y E Yang will be making his sixth visit to the tournament. The Korean became Asia's first Major Champion when he won the 2009 US PGA Championship. American David Lipsky and India's Anirban Lahiri will be resuming their battle for the prestigious Asian Tour's Order of Merit crown, as the top two ranked golfers on the region's premier Tour.

Three of China's best golfers will also be competing in the US$1.3 million event, in seasoned professionals Liang Wen-chong (China's number one) and Zhang Liangwei, and rising amateur William Liu Yan-wei.

Other notable names in the starting field of 138 for the 56th Hong Kong Open include big-hitting Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, Frenchman Gregory Bourdy, winner of the 2013 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award Peter Uihlein and fellow American Rich Beem who won the 2002 US PGA Championship.

The Hong Kong Open will be played over 72 holes (four rounds) stroke play. After 36 holes the field will be cut to the leading 65 plus ties. A Pro-Am will take place on the Wednesday before the tournament, to be played on the Championship Composite Course.

Considered one of the 'jewels in the crown' of Asian golf, the HK Open will this year again be tri-sanctioned by the HK Golf Association, Asian Tour and European Tour, and will be the penultimate event on The European Tour International Schedule before the lucrative Final Series. The tournament joined the Asian Tour in 2000, before being co-sanctioned the following year with The European Tour as part of the 2002 schedule. Past winners have included Major Champions Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman, Peter Thomson, Tom Watson and Ian Woosnam.

The Hong Kong Open holds the distinction of being the only national championship in Asia to be held at the same golf club since its inauguration in 1959. That club - the Hong Kong Golf Club - has also hosted a number of other prestigious international golfing tournaments such as the Eisenhower and Espirito Santo Trophies in 1984, the Asian Zone Qualifying Round for the Dunhill Cup in 1985 and the first Johnnie Walker Classic in Asia in 1990.
