How to Beat Bad Breath Fast and Naturally

Bad breath can take a hold of persons esteem, even their entire life, and force them to live a sheltered, cautious existence. Having bad breath can make the sufferer go all out, all day, every day to protect themselves from hurt or shame. Almost everything we put into our mouth, particulary food and drink, can make it smell less pleasant. For the majority of people, the most frequent cause of bad breath is associated with bacteria that live in the mouth, particularly on the tongue. The good news is that for the most part-with proper dental care-bad breath, also called halitosis, can be avoided. Maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath, as bacteria that builds up on the back of your tongue or in between your teeth is the main culprit.

1. Parsley adds more than green to your lunch plate; it's also a breath-saver, because it contains chlorophyll, a known breath deodorizer. So pick up that sprig garnishing your plate and chew it thoroughly. Or toss a few handfuls (even add some watercress to the mix) in a juicer. Sip the juice anytime you need to refresh your breath.

2. Ban certain beverages. Coffee, beer, wine, and whiskey are at the top of the list of liquid offenders. Each leaves a residue that can attach to the plaque in your mouth and infiltrate your digestive system. Each breath you take spews traces back into the air.

3. Bad breath is often simply the result of a dry mouth. If this is the case, simply eating a citrus fruit that is high in citric acid (such as an orange, lemon, or grapefruit) can help improve your breath significantly. The acid in such fruits stimulates the saliva, which helps suppress some of the odor-causing bacteria. At the same time, the tangy taste of such fruits leaves the mouth smelling fresh.

4. Thorough brushing and flossing remove bacteria and go a long way toward relieving bad breath. Brush teeth daily, preferable after every meal. If you can't brush after every meal, the American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride. Use an up-and-down motion rather than brushing side-to-side. It can be hard to reach those back teeth, so an angled toothbrush might help.

5. Mix extracts of sage, calendula, and myrrh gum (all available at health food stores) in equal proportions and gargle with the mixture four times a day. Keep the mouthwash in a tightly sealed jar at room temperature. Even when you can't brush, you can rinse.

6. Lemon has antioxidants that can dilute strong smell and help in the bad breath elimination process. Gargling with lemon and water can also be done not just when you are brushing your teeth but anytime of the day.

7. Floss regularly as well to eliminate bacteria hiding between teeth. They now make these wonderful things called "floss picks," which are little plastic devices with dental floss stretched between two picks. You don't have to mess with long strings of floss wrapped around your fingers anymore. You can buy these anywhere you can buy dental floss.
