Home Maintenance Tips For Your Air Conditioner

101 5
One of the best ways to keep an air conditioning system in good working condition is to have it serviced on a regular basis. However, annual and professional inspection is not the only way to keep your unit running at optimum levels. A little homeowner upkeep can also go a long way in keeping your AC system in excellent condition.

It may seem like a daunting task trying to maintain an AC unit without professional help. However, it doesn't need to be confusing, frustrating or problematic if you know what to do. Here are a few home maintenance tips that will also be beneficial for your air conditioning system.

Rid Your Home of Dust and Vegetation Debris

Dust and vegetation debris tend to clog air conditioners and restrict air flow. Blockages also cause the system to work harder and use up more power. The more your AC works, the higher its energy consumption. This not only increases the cost of operating the AC system, but also shortens its lifespan. It is therefore important to keep your air conditioning unit clean at all times.

If you have installed a central AC for your home, the condenser unit located outside should be kept clean. Rake and vacuum any debris that may have fallen from nearby vegetation. It is advisable to trim any trees or bushes around your condensing unit. In addition, try to maintain a clearance of two feet around the unit.

In addition, prevent lawn sprinklers from spraying water on the condensing unit. Too much exposure to water can cause the components of a central AC that is located outside the house to rust, which may not be covered in your warranty.

Vacuum your coils for room AC units as well. If the coils in your window air conditioners are not easily accessible, they may need to be cleaned by a certified service person. Regular dusting or cleaning inside your home will also reduce the rate of dust accumulation that often occurs with window air conditioners.

Mold Removal

When performing regular mold removal, don't forget to clean your AC system. Mold growth commonly occurs in the condensate drain pans. You can prepare a DIY mold removal cleaner with ingredients that are commonly found in your convenient store such as borax, vinegar and bleach. However, ensure not to use mold killing solutions that can damage your AC system.

Some manufactures design their AC units with self-cleansing systems. For instance, various Panasonic air conditioner models come with the Nanoe G air purifying system that rids your AC of bacteria, viruses and mold. With a Panasonic central or window air conditioner, your maintenance tasks will be simplified since this brand is known for manufacturing systems that are easy to look after.
