As a responsible dog owner you will be aware of the importance of teaching your dog to obey your commands.
The most important of these is the "COME" command which is an essential command to keep your dog out of dangerous situations that may occur.
You will be well rewarded for your efforts in teaching your dog to come on demand.
Although it will take a little longer for your dog to master this command, once mastered it is extremely powerful and you will be pleased that you took the time to train your dog.
The most important aspect of this command is the fact that it is an instant command and you must train your dog to come to you the instant you command, no matter where they are, or what they are doing.
Now please remember the number one rule of dog training.
Never punish your dog by being physically violent towards them.
There are far better ways to control behaviour.
Please remember that it will take a while for your dog to master this command.
It is essential that you praise your dog when it comes to you and after a while the response time will shorten as your dog becomes more used to the command.
The Come Command.
  • Praise your dog every time it comes over to you on its own.
You will find that it is normal for dogs to run over to you.
Note that the association of coming to you and praise is very important.
  • Once you dog is coming over to you on its own, watch and when close, just before it reaches you, say "come".
  • Begin indoors and start the association between the action and the word.
Bend down and say "Your dogs name...
    come".
If they need a little encouragement, tap the floor lightly or hold a toy or treat to lure them over.
  • If you have a friend or family member to help you, you can use the "back and forth" method where you are on one side of the room and you helper on the other, and take it in turns to call your dog over.
When your dog comes on command, reward it: a small piece of dog biscuit or treat, plus plenty of praise.
  • If your dog gets too fast at this and arrives before the command is given try using a larger room or hall or move onto the next step.
  • Now outside, this is where this command is usually used for safety reasons.
Put you dog on it's leash and say "come" as you walk backwards.
Remember; praise your dog when it comes to you.
  • Attach a long line to your dog's collar.
This will give your dog more freedom but they are still on a lead.
Again say "come" and remember to praise your dog when it responds by coming over.
  • Go into your backyard with your helper.
Position yourselves about 40 feet apart and let your dog move around the yard without it's leash.
Now throw a ball near your helper and as you throw the ball say "your dog's name..
    ..
Come!" Naturally your dog will want to chase the ball so this is a true test of the command.
They should have listened to your command and come to you; if they have, praise is given.
If your dog goes after the ball, have your helper pick it up before your dog gets to it and hold the ball and ignore your dog.
    Keep repeating the exercise.
Teaching your dog to come should mean something positive to your dog.
You want it to want to come to you.
Ensure that you use the "come" command throughout the day so that your dog become used to it in different situations.
