The Components of Backgammon Sets

It is a pleasure to play the classic strategic game of backgammon on a nice, well made board and pieces which are great to handle.
Backgammon sets can be purchased very inexpensively for everyday play or more expensively in quite ornate and collectible fashion.
The type you will go for will depend on your budget and purpose.
Here is an overview of the components of backgammon sets and some of the varieties available.
The board can be made in any one of several materials.
Some examples being wood, plastic, vinyl, leather and even metal.
The higher end versions are like another piece of furniture with the board built in to an ornate table.
These do look great of course though be prepared to pay accordingly.
However there is a backgammon set to suit all budgets and players.
For those who might like to while away a long journey, one can obtain smaller, compact version made for travelling.
Just like the table or board, the playing pieces too are available in different sizes, materials and weights.
If you are really hooked on the game, having a nice expensive set can help add to the pleasure of playing as well as being great to look at.
On the other hand if you want something more functional then that's available too.
But what does a backgammon set consist of? Each has thirty chips or playing pieces - fifteen of one colour and fifteen of another.
The colours are generally black and white though this can differ depending on the nature of the set.
The chips are usually made from a heavy plastic for durability but they can also be made from wood and other materials to match the board.
Two shakers (for the dice) are also included.
One for each player to sake their dice in and make their roll.
The shakers may well match the colour of the playing pieces and be made from the same materials as the board and playing pieces so everything is a good match.
Finally the dice.
At least two dice are included.
There may be four dice - two for each player so each player uses their own dice.
If four dice they will usually be made in the same colours as the playing pieces and each player can use their own dice.
A doubling cube is a six-sided dice with a numbering convention of 2, 4, 18, 16, 32, and 64.
This usually only comes in to use when backgammon is played for money.
This completes our whistle-stop tour of backgammon sets, what's included in them and the different styles and varieties available.
If you are a beginner you may like to start with an inexpensive set to get you on your way.
Then if you are truly bitten by the backgammon bug you can always graduate to a more expensive, better made set or even the real fancy sets.
Whichever you decide I hope you enjoy your games.
