Skylights are a very popular feature in modern homes. They add resell value and are very effective at bringing in light to rooms. Due to their positioning in the house (on the roof), skylights are a blessing and a curse. The major benefits to having one is that they allow sunlight into rooms that otherwise might not be able to receive it. For instance, rooms that have fewer windows, or with windows only on the North and South side, tend to be more shaded than others. A skylight allows light to come in directly from above, which allows light to disperse throughout the entire space. In contrast to wall windows, a ceiling window is the most effective way to brighten up a space. In addition, a room with a skylight will not need any artificial light, save for in the evenings. Lastly, a home with a skylight just feels warmer. Nothing beats seeing golden rays pouring down from above.

While a skylight is a delight to have, like anything else they do need routine maintenance. This can be a hassle, especially if one has high ceilings. In the event of an air leak or a damaged pane of glass, the window will need to be replaced or sealed up. Installing a skylight the right way can save one time and money down the road. Heat rises, so making sure these windows are sealed up from the onset is paramount. Unlike their wall counterparts, skylights are subject to a vast amount of heat trying to escape. Making the frame is installed correctly can go a long way towards saving money on one's electricity bill. In addition, it will keep one from having to service the window in the future.

Routine inspections are critical for maintaining anything, and this cannot be stressed enough for skylights. One should periodically inspect the window to make sure there are no cracks on the pane or around the frame. One way to tell if a skylight requires servicing is if the drywall around the window is damaged or buckled. This could show an issue. Aside from repairing a damaged unit, making sure the window is clean and free from debris is very important as well. Given that skylights are installed on roofs, it is important that one hires a contractor to the job. A professional window replacement or a cleaning company will have the equipment needed to do the job right. One should never attempt to clean a window that is so high off the ground. While a skylight is a wondrous piece of architectural design, they do need maintenance like any other part of a home. The difference is the risk associated with it. This is one job that should be left to the professionals, for safety reasons alone.
