How to Mold Your Own Plugs for Earrings
- 1). Roll a piece of clay for each plug in your fingers until it becomes soft and pliable. You want to use pieces that are larger than the final expected size of the plugs. Mix and match colors by rolling different colors together to create a marbling effect.
- 2). Place a piece of parchment paper on your surface and place the clay on the parchment.
- 3). Roll the pieces of clay flat using a clay roller tool. Place an ear plug that you currently own in the size and thickness you want to make your plug next to each piece of clay and roll the clay to the same thickness.
- 4). Place your current ear plug on top of the flattened clay pieces and score a line to trace the diameter onto the clay using a pointed clay tool.
- 5). Cut around the score line of the clay using a clay-cutting tool. This will create a plug that is roughly the same size as your original.
- 6). Decorate the plugs in any way you desire. Press stamps or clay texture sheets on top of the plug or carve designs using a pointed clay tool. Be careful not to alter the size or shape of the plug.
- 7). Create a light indentation around the outer edge of each clay plug to mock the shape of your original plug using a rounded tool. Study the characteristics of your original plug and reproduce this on the clay plugs. Ear plugs typically have a slight rounded indentation in the middle which creates a lip that will overlap the lobe to make the plug more comfortable and help prevent it from coming out.
- 8). Bake your plugs according to the clay package instructions.
