New Applications of Photo Enforcement Emerge As Public Safety Needs Increase in a Variety of Roadway

A leader in image enforcing technology and other road safety technology, Redflex Traffic Systems, recently published a white paper covering innovative solutions specifically designed to enhance safety at railroad crossings, construction work zones, school bus stops, and stop-sign enforced areas with congested pedestrian traffic. Titled "New Applications of Photo Enforcement Emerge as Public Safety Needs Increase in a Variety of Roadway Environments," this valuable information will help budget-strapped agencies enforce traffic laws around-the-clock while allowing patrols to focus on higher priority tasks. The ultimate goals, of course, are to improve public safety and save lives.

Photograph enforce technology has been around for over two decades. As numerous studies emerged citing the safety-enhancing benefits of these solutions, hundreds of municipalities and other government agencies have implemented them throughout North America.

Advances in technology have expanded the applications of photo-enforcement. These applications do the same in terms of deterring drivers from violating traffic laws. However, they're being specially adapted to specific situations such as these:

* Railroad Crossings - These scenarios are especially dangerous. Railroad crossing related crashes are often fatal, as trains are extremely heavy and difficult to stop. A train cannot just stop on a dime if something or someone is in its pathway.

To help improve public safety, railroad companies are working with government agencies and image enforcement providers to develop innovation solutions. Using cameras can provide an effective, economical deterrent. This can also provide valuable surveillance at these hazardous crossings.

* Construction Work Zones - Like railroad crossings, construction zones present safety challenges for government agencies and workers. Unfortunately, safety cones, barrels and other visual barricades don't provide the required security level. Many drivers still tend to speed through these vulnerable areas.

For the well-being of road workers and drivers, photo enforcing technology may be the only answer to discouraging bad driving behavior in construction work zones.

* School Bus Stops - When drivers illegally pass a school bus, they endanger the lives of children. A child could be fatally injured while loading and unloading from the school bus.

Reporting this reckless behavior often fell on the shoulders of the school bus driver. However, as can be expected, the bus drivers had their hands full already. Schools soon learned this reporting process was ineffective.

Now, these systems are available to identify and track offenders. The camera system is installed on the outside of the bus on the driver's side. If someone illegally passes, the camera captures the offender's data automatically, with no required input from the driver.

* Areas with Congested Pedestrian Traffic - When a driver ignores a stop sign this can result in a right-angle collision, and pedestrians can be seriously injured or killed. Yet, it happens all too often. In stop sign intersections, photos-enforcement solutions provide an excellent deterrent, especially in areas with a history of crashes.
