Scholarships From the Lions Club
- As with most scholarships, the main purpose of Lions Club scholarships is to provide tuition money to students to pay for college. Many Lions Club scholarships go even further by offering scholarships to students who may not normally get to attend college, like the visually and hearing impaired. One of the organization's top 10 projects in 2009-2010, scholarships also help the Lions Club fulfill its main purpose of giving back to communities.
- Lions Club scholarships are offered mostly at the local club level and a majority go to graduating high school seniors. Several local Lions Club branches also have student arms that offer scholarships, like the Saratoga Springs Lions Club, which offers a Leos Club Scholarships that goes to a member of the student Leos Club. Lions Club scholarships are also designated to students graduating from a certain high school or living in a certain area, like the Cedar Hill Lions Club Scholarship for graduates of Cedar Hill High School and Trinity Christian School in Texas.
- Some scholarships, like the Sanibel Captiva Lions Club Scholarship, go to multiple students, while others award only one student. Scholarships like the Lions Club Scholarship at Kankakee Community College give money to hearing or visually impaired students wanting to obtain a teaching degree at Kankakee Community College. Each scholarship awards a different amount in scholarship money, anywhere from $500 for one year up to $4,000 over four years.
- To qualify for any of the Lions Club scholarships, a student must fulfill certain requirements. Each scholarship's qualifications vary, but most require a student to be a graduating high school senior, to be attending an accredited college, university or trade school and to maintain a certain grade point average. Application qualifications vary as well. For example, for the Cedar Hill Lions Club scholarship, students must submit an application, three letters of recommendation and an essay about the importance of community service.
- Each scholarship has its own application deadline, ranging anywhere from late winter to early summer. Winners generally are announced by the start of the next school year. Scholarship applications for each of the awards can be found online at that club's website, at that club's headquarters or through the student's high school.
