Growing Up:

Colombian-American Ryan Cabrera was born in Dallas, Texas in 1982. He taught himself to play guitar in middle school and formed a punk band named Caine in high school.

However, he didn't see music as a career possibility. It was simply a teenage hobby. Cabrera's life plan changed when he was introduced to the music of Dave Matthews. He traded in his electric guitar for an acoustic one, dropped punk music, and formed a new band named Rubix Groove.

Rubix Groove:

With management assistance from his older brother Marc, Ryan Cabrera saw his band become one of the most popular in the Dallas area. Rubix Groove performed with such established groups as Cheap Trick and Third Eye Blind. The members of the band enrolled as students at the University Of Texas, and the group soon became one of the most popular musical acts on campus. Ryan Cabrera's brother Marc then precipitated another life changing event.

First Self-Produced Ryan Cabrera Solo Album:

Marc Cabrera bought his brother recording studio time as a birthday gift. He could only afford studio time for one person so Ryan Cabrera went into the studio alone without his fellow band members. He took with him 3 songs he had written, and the engineer on duty was so impressed he asked Ryan to record an entire album.

These recordings became the album Elm St.. It was successfully self-released and marketed in 2001.

Major Label Success:

Elm St. soon was sold out at local record stores, and it began selling strongly via the Internet. In response, Ryan Cabrera quit school and decided to focus on a solo recording career. Instead of living the life of a college dropout, he embarked on learning more about how to be a singer. Cabrera hired a vocal coach for formal training. He secluded himself for 5 months to practice singing.

Once Ryan Cabrera felt he was ready for the next step in his career, he hooked up with Joe Simpson, father of Jessica and Ashlee, as his manager. He set out on a national tour with singer Howie Day. With a major label recording contract from Atlantic Records, Ryan Cabrera headed into the studio with the Goo Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik as producer. Gaining songwriting assistance from Rzeznik and former Robbie Williams collaborator Guy Chambers among others, he released his first major label album, Take It All Away, in August, 2004.

Take It All Away debuted in the top 10 of the pop albums chart and included the top 20 pop singles "True" and "On the Way Down." Soon Ryan Cabrera's relationship with Ashlee Simpson drew nearly as much attention as his music. His second album You Stand Watching was scheduled for a September 2005 release and was preceded by the single "Shine On."
