Cohesive Gel Breast Implants Are Prone To Larger Than Average Surgical Scarring

The cohesive gel implant is gaining in popularity. If you're considering this implant for your breast augmentation surgery, there are a few things you should know.

The most requested implant for breast augmentation surgeries performed inside the United States is the traditional silicone gel breast implant. When it comes to safety, the saline implant takes top honors regardless where you're located. While both of those implants are currently the only two choices available for American women, there's a new implant that's quickly making waves and garnering attention. It's called the cohesive gel implant. Although the FDA is still undergoing its clinical trial of this new implant, it won't be much longer before the FDA gives its stamp of approval and the cohesive gel implant can be used without restriction.

The cohesive gel implant is affectionately nicknamed the Gummy Bear Breast Implant. It earned this nickname as a direct result of its consistency and feel in the hand which closely resembles the consistency of the popular candy by the same name; when you squeeze a cohesive gel implant it feels like you're squeezing a Gummy Bear candy! Both the traditional silicone gel implant and the saline beast implant use liquid filler inside, allowing for a person to squeeze the implant and displace the liquid inside the implant shell.

First and foremost, the cohesive gel implant is not available for breast augmentation surgeries performed inside the United States. The FDA has not finished its clinical trials so the only way you can actually get the implant for your surgery is to join the trial. You'll need to track down a surgeon that is participating in the trial and then you'll need to schedule an initial consultation with that particular surgeon. While it's unlikely that you'll be accepted, that is currently the only method to getting this new implant unless you travel outside the U.S. to get your surgery (which isn't recommended).

When it comes to cost, the gummy bear implant is expected to be more expensive than either traditional silicone or saline implants simply because of the expense of the clinical trial and the fact that the implant will no doubt undergo several design changes as a result of the FDA's findings. The reality is, until the implant is approved for unrestricted use, the actual cost of the implant to the consumer will be unknown. However, since the implant is currently undergoing research by the FDA, the cost may be minimal to you - if you are accepted as a participant in the clinical trial, you will more than likely get reimbursed for your surgery costs as well as the cost of the implants themselves. To learn more, speak directly with a surgeon that is participating in the clinical trial.

When it comes to incisions, the cohesive gel implant requires the largest incision out of all of the currently available breast implants. The reason why has to do with the implant being a solid mass of gel that is preformed into the anatomical shape of a real breast. Because it's preformed, the implant cannot be squeezed through a small opening in the same manner as a traditional silicone implant or a saline breast implant. If scarring is something that is completely unacceptable to you, the cohesive gel implant may not be the ideal implant device for your breast augmentation surgery.

While it's a great idea to perform research online about breast augmentation surgery and the current FDA approved breast implants, any information you gather from an internet source should not be interpreted as medical advice. If you're considering any type of invasive plastic surgery, you'll need to speak with a licensed doctor about your intentions. Ideally, you will want to find a plastic surgeon that is board certified in the procedure you are interested in. The more experience the surgeon has performing that particular surgery, the more reliable you can consider his input. Good luck!
