How to Trim Rooster Spurs
- 1). Wrap a fearful rooster in a towel. For smaller breeds, use a dog nail trimmer. Slide the trimmer down the spur--only as far as to blunt the tip-- and cut. Remove only the sharp tip of the spur.
- 2). Use a file to file down the spur tip in small breeds. Wrap struggling birds in a towel and file off the spur's tip. This may need to be repeated as the spur grows out.
- 3). Use a fine-toothed saw to remove the spur tip from large breeds. Wrap the bird in a towel or have an assistant hold the rooster. Saw through the tip of the spur. File down any rough edges.
- 4). Have a handler hold the large breed rooster. Trim the tip off the spur using a horse hoof nipper.
