Pacific Food Security Threatened

Mark Howden, from Australia's national science agency the CSIRO is one of Australia's leading experts on climate change. He states that climate change, rising sea levels and the cost of shipping food to outer islands are all serious issues the Pacific nations are facing when it comes to food security.

Dr Howden believes population growth in the Pacific islands has stressed the capacity of the islands being self-sufficient hence their reliance on food imports. His expertise has Dr Howden leading the food security chapter in the United Nations report on climate change.

In a recent radio interview, Dr Howden said the capacity of Pacific nations t0buy and deliver food will become an issue as fossil fuels prices continue to rise. The Pacific nations isolation will only fuel the inevitable economic changes.

The challenges for the Pacific nations dont stop there. Climate changes will become in a sense quite wetter and hotter in the equatorial regions, and hotter and drier in most of the rest of the Pacific. This alone will have significant impacts on these islands.

Dr Howden said Sea level rise and salination of fresh water supplies and acidification of some of those ocean waters around the Pacific islands, particularly the more southerly ones, are going to impact on the food web in the ocean as well."

Food security and water shortage issues must be tackled together as one.

Samoa, have already began rationing water supplies as the countrys catchments dry up.

"Where water is being used for agricultural production or food processing, clearly then your capacity to actually provide adequate water of adequate quality is going to impact on those food productions and processing activities," Dr Howden said.

"We know in a whole range of Pacific Islands that that's either happening or likely to happen, that water's going to become more limited.

Climate change is taking place before our eyes.
