With four breweries calling Memphis home, not to mention some great beer-drinking spots spread throughout the city, Oktoberfest in Memphis is a time to celebrate. A couple of the Memphis breweries have Oktoberfest celebrations, and there are other beer and German-themed events taking place in Memphis the next several weeks to celebrate the occasion.

The Memphis beer scene is well represented with Ghost River Brewing, Wiseacre Brewing, High Cotton Brewing Co.

and Memphis Made. These four breweries, along with the city's original brewpub Boscos Squared, have plenty of seasonal offerings for the Oktoberfest-drinking crowd.

Wiseacre and High Cotton have taprooms open to the public where the two breweries will be serving their respective Oktoberfest selections. The other breweries have offerings that can be found throughout the city's bars and restaurants and growler filling stations.

Wiseacre Brewing Co.:

Wiseacre Brewing Co. will open the doors to its taproom a couple hours earlier than usual on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. Wiseacre Brewing’s second Oktoberfest will feature the final kegs of the brewery’s German-style beers: Dr. Gibbler Smoked Helles, Uncle Puppy Hefeweizen, Schweinhelmut Berliner Weisse and Young Turk Pale Bock, and of course the Oktoberfest beer. The event has no cover; it’s pay as you drink. There will be $1 off beers for attendees who dress up in Oktoberfest attire as well as specials for those who bring their own glass beer stein.

The chefs from Hog and Hominy and Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen will grill food. The Mighty Souls Brass Band will play polka music and Bea Sweet Bakery will prepare German desserts. The fun goes until 6 p.m.

Schweinehaus:

Schweinehaus is a new German restaurant that opened Sept. 1, 2014, fronting Madison Avenue in Overton Square. The restaurant is German with Memphis influences. On Sept. 28 beginning at 11 a.m. and lasting throughout the day the restaurant will celebrate Oktoberfest with games and prizes, a yodeling contest, Masskrugstemmen stein holding competition and much more.

High Cotton Brewing Co.:

High Cotton Brewing Co. will host its first Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, from noon to 7 p.m. at the High Cotton taproom at 598 Monroe Ave. in the Edge district of Downtown Memphis. The event will benefit Grow Memphis and feature a special release of the High Cotton Oktoberfest lager. The High Cotton Oktoberfest celebration will feature activities that will keep all ages happy: circus performers, live music, games for the kids and all the beer you can drink. For $40, attendees will get food and access to open taps all afternoon. VIP tickets, which costs $75, will include a commemorative glass stein, Oktoberfest T-shirt, larger beer selection, locally raised whole pig roast and an all-you-can-eat buffet.
