Using Crate Training To Potty Train Your Dog - Is Crate Training Cruel To Your Dog?

While I was doing some research for an Article that I was writing on "Potty Training" Dogs, I found some postings in which someone stated that "Crate/Kennel Training was a terrible form of Potty Training for your dog, because it is cruel to the animal.
" In this article, I will explore this topic, and and will answer the question" Is Crate Training Cruel to Your Dog"? In short, my answer is "It depends".
If you perform "Crate Training properly and responsibly, then the answer is "No; using this form of 'House Training' on your dog is definitely not cruel".
Conversely, if you are lazy and irresponsible about how you implement "Crate/Kennel Training", then you're definitely being cruel to your dog.
In this article, I will discuss the following topics.
What responsible (and compassionate) Crate/Kennel Training looks like, and What irresponsible (and cruel) Crate/Kennel Training looks like 1.
0 WHAT RESPONSIBLE CRATE/KENNEL TRAINING LOOKS LIKE Responsible Crate Training would (at a minimum) include the following: The dog is only placed inside the Crate whenever the Owner CANNOT directly supervise her activities and location.
Throughout the day, the dog would be confined inside the crate for up to 2 hours (maximum) at a time.
After wards, she (at a minimum) would be taken out to the "Designated Toilet Area" where she can relieve herself.
The dog would also be let out of the Crate approximately one-hour after each meal.
The dog owner would spend a reasonable amount of time petting, playing, grooming and establishing a relationship with the dog - all while outside of the Crate (After all, isn't this the point of getting a dog in the first place?).
Rigid Crate Training (e.
g.
, where the dog is involuntarily placed in the Crate) would last for about 1 to 2 months.
After this time-period, your dog usually "gets the idea" of where she is to "relieve herself" and (in most cases) will not mess up anymore.
At this point, you can start to let up on some of the Supervision.
2.
0 WHAT IRRESPONSIBLE CRATE/KENNEL TRAINING LOOKS LIKE The dog is placed inside the Crate, and is left there for many hours at a time.
The dog is rarely let out of the Crate and is rarely petted, played with or groomed.
This would be the definition of a cruel and uncaring owner that should be reported to the ASPCA.
COMMENT: If this description (of irresponsible Crate Training) resembles how you implement Crate Training, then I have to ask; why are you doing this? If you cannot be around your dog (throughout the day) because you have to go to a job (or other time-consuming obligation), then you should seriously consider "Paper Training" your dog instead.
SUMMARY In this article, I answered the question "Is Crate Training Cruel?" In short, I stated that (like virtually all types of training) if the training is handled with care, diligence and love; then it is definitely NOT cruel.
However, if the owner is neglectful and is not serious about building a relationship with his new dog...
then yes, Crate Training or any form of Training will be cruel to your dog.
