Work at home workers fight against stereotypes
In the beginning the work at home jobs were sought by mothers from whom family was the number one priority and the career was on the second place. These work at home jobs were the perfect solutions for the mothers who were raising their children, taking care of the house and wanted to help their husbands by bringing some money into the household. Because these work at home positions started with taking paid online surveys or by entering data in the computer, they were not taken seriously by a lot of people. However the work at home mothers were the best at doing this kind of jobs because they were usually the ones shopping, cooking, paying bills and taking care of the kids, thus it made perfect sense for them to be paid for giving out their opinions related to different household issues.
The number one stereotype is that if you work from home you are not actually working. It takes one a lot of self discipline and energy to be able to take care of the household, take care of the children and find time to work from home too. To fight against this stereotype you have to make sure your friends and family know when you are working. If somebody calls to chat with you during the time when you are working for your work at home job, you can either leave the answering machine take a message or you can answer and tell them to call you later. Sometimes even the spouse does not take you seriously. To change this show him what you are working, explain to him what you have to do and show him the checks that you are getting.
A lot of time your friends or acquaintances will make comments about your work at home job. Some people consider that if you do not go to work you are not really working. Do not get angry with them, but try to make them understand what you do and show them some of the things you are doing. Because working at home is a relatively new field a lot of people are skeptical about it and do not think about it as having a real job. Most importantly if you are working at home and you like what you are doing, do not listen to what others say about it and continue doing it as long as it works for you and your family.
