Imagine the pleasure of having the ability to paint the likeness of someone on canvas.
This is by no means easy.
The following tips may be of value if someone would like to achieve this.
If you put in enough effort, this is not so hard to do.
Using photos is one option, although it is far more productive to use a living model, for your painting.
You cannot underestimate how much better this is.
You must have the power of keen observation and an eye for detail.
Observe the shapes and the structure of your subject.
Lighting and shadows play an immense part when you are just starting out as a painter as these can be a significant contribution to the overall effect.
You must play close attention to each part of your subject one step at a time.
Watch out for the thickness of your paint and try to maintain a lighter application on the dark portions of the subject.
When painting the whites of the eyes you must remember that they are not white at all.
For the secret of capturing a true colour, it is necessary to determine the main subjects flesh colour and make this lighter by adding a tinge of pale grey.
Take proper care when mixing your paint for the flesh tones in the painting.
This will always be difficult to obtain as there are so many skin colours and textures to take into account.
The right tint will only be produced by a great deal of experimenting, and this will become easier with more experience.
If you over mix your paint it can make it look dull and cold, this is usually the case with skin colours.
Try not to worry too much over the little details when painting your background.
It is your subject that must be the purpose of your attention and you must not allow the background to distract from this.
Painting the hair does not require you to paint each individual strand.
Try to concentrate more on the lighting and shade.
You will have areas of the features that will be cooler than other parts, and you must try to capture this to create a better likeness.
These are just a few techniques and tips for the beginner and hopefully will inspire you to begin to create your own masterpiece.
Portrait painting is a truly rewarding experience and is a tremendous creative outlet.
