From Playing Trivia to Creating Multimedia Trivia Games

Playing games has always been fun. Everybody has played to all sorts of games. The ones we enjoyed the most where probably those we played when we where children. When we are playing we are having fun, but we do not realize those games have a history behind them and first appeared thanks to the idea of one person or a group of people. Those games were then distributed with the power of the word of mouth or because somebody wrote the rules of the game and left it as a legacy for the rest. With the Internet, the word of mouth follows the same principles, but the power is much greater.

In 1979, Trivial Pursuit was created and it sold over 20 million games in 1984. It was a simple board game with interesting trivia questions. Those questions were created by a reduced group of people. Do you imagine how many questions can be created if we combine the power of the word of mouth? To the power of collaboration, add all the resources available, like Youtube videos, pictures and knowledge already submitted to the World Wide Web and you will have some powerful tools to create entertaining trivia games as have never been created before.

Something to highlight about trivia games is that they can have a double purpose, to entertain and to educate. It is clear that education institutions and methodologies are being transformed by the Internet, and games might have a big role in the task of educating. It is always more fun to play a trivia game with a Youtube video embedded within it, than to answer to a plain quiz with just text. Everyday we are seeing how the content of the Internet is growing and trivia games are not only generated by a few members of a company. Trivia games are now created by the users with the multimedia available on the web.
