How to Raid on WoW: Raid Progression in Northrend

Congratulations, you've hit level 80 and are trying to figure out what to do next.  Suddenly you can't level anymore unless you go roll an alt, but what fun is that?  You'll miss out on all the higher level Northrend content.  With Naxxramas and Ulduar out there with tons of great loot and fun boss fights, learning how to raid on WoW is an important step to seeing some of the most interesting high level content the game has to offer.

Most regular (casual) raid guilds raid 2 to 3 nights a week in Northrend.  There are currently 17 instances in WotLK content (including the Caverns of Time dungeon).  These include over 150 different encounters over different levels of difficulty.  Anyone who's fairly new to the game or has spent most of their time PvPing or soloing is going to have a hard time starting out as a raider, and it can be pretty intimidating, especially when you run through Dalaran and see all those top rated players and their sparkling epic tier 9 gear.  So how do you get started?

The trick is to start small and work your way up.  There are many different ways to take on raid content without getting completely destroyed in the learning process.  It's important to find a team of like-minded people; this is why joining a guild can really help you when you want to get started raiding.  You'll learn the content, build friendships and learn how to play with your teammates, and learn how to effectively play your class.

Don't expect to succeed every time when you're first learning an encounter.  It helps to do research ahead of time, and there are plenty of free online resources out there to help you.  Youtube hosts videos on every boss encounter imaginable; Tankspot has put out great boss videos for all the Northrend raid content.  Doing research ahead of time gives you a leg up because you'll know what to expect from every encounter.

Remember, the whole point of playing this game is to have fun.  If you aren't having fun raiding or find yourself with a bunch of loot whores who don't care about the people behind the pixelated characters, leave your guild and find one that cares about seeing the content, not the shiny epic purples.  With dedication and the right people to play with, you can learn how to raid on WoW and tear through Northrend content in just a few weeks' time.
