If you're a youth backpacking through Russia, you're going to need an economical place to rest your head. Fortunately, the Russian Federation has a number of youth hostels for the traveler on a budget. - The Saint Petersburg International Hostel was Russia's first hostel, opened in 1992. The building is a renovated 19th Century structure providing a mixture of history on the outside with all modern conveniences on the inside. The hostel boasts 24-hour access and security guards so you never have to worry about getting in or out of the hostel safely. The staff is versed in three languages--Spanish, English and Italian. The hostel also offers daily walking tours of the city. Bed linens are available at no extra charge.

The area around the hostel is a mixture of Old Russia (cobblestone alleys and medieval churches) and New Russia (trendy clubs and bars). Checkout is at noon, so travelers can sleep in before heading off on the next leg of their journey. For the traveler not getting a lot of sleep, the Napoleon Hostel offers free coffee and tea all day, in addition to free wireless Internet. The building was allegedly once home to Napoleon on his 1812 visit to Russia.
