What is Twitter?

Twitter, also known as micro-blogging, is an increasingly popular social networking tool based on the question 'What are you doing?'.
People connect with each other in a real-time stream through messages called 'tweets', which have a maximum of 140 characters, so you need to be concise with what you say.
You respond to the above question by informing the world about your activities, business, feelings and emotions - whatever you think people will want to know.
Twitter is great for helping with increasing your personal branding, gaining feedback, publicising your business, communicating with potential customers, offering and receiving support, or just making new friends and contacts.
You can communicate with your target market and engage them in conversation, and also find out anything you need to know by asking questions (sometimes with better results than search engines).
On Facebook you have friends, but on Twitter you have followers: people who watch for and read your tweets and vice versa as you follow others too; you can even eavesdrop on other conversations and jump in if you have something suitable to say.
You can also create general, direct or private communications with other tweeters.
To help with this you can upload applications that allow you to see Twitter in real-time, such as TweetDeck, so you can see tweets as they arrive and you can respond immediately.
There are other applications to help your time on Twitter, such as Twitterfeed which allows you to feed your blog posts and articles into Twitter so more people can read them, and Twellow to find gurus and experts in your field who you would like to follow.
There are also a huge number of applications specifically generated for Twitter to enable vibrant social marketers to keep abreast of what is happening, even through other technology such as mobile phones.
Top tips for Twitter • don't tweet rubbish or stuff nobody wants to read • make sure your tweets are full of interesting material that is relevant to your business • share or retweet other entries so your followers can get a larger audience; this is a social nicety • feed your blog, newsletter and other social networking into Twitter • make sure your bio is up to date should anybody want to find out more about you.
