How to Make a Phylactery Out of Cardstock
- 1). Assign the symbols L, W and D to measurements you will use to make a cardstock phylactery. L and W are the length and width of the religious text you will be putting in the phylactery -- actually, L and W should be just a little larger than the length and width, so the messages fit snugly in the phylactery without bending. D symbolizes the depth of the phylactery, and this depends on the depth of the stack of messages.
- 2). Draw a cross pattern on cardstock -- you do not have to use white cardstock -- black or brown are suitable alternatives. The center of the cross pattern is L by W. The arms of the cross come off the W sides of the center and each arm is D by W. The long part of the cross is L by (D + W + ½ D).
- 3). Cut out the pattern and crease along the boundaries of the center. Also, crease across the long part of the cross at a distance D from the center and again at a distance ½ D from the extreme end of the long part. The four areas surrounding the center are going to fold up to make the box, and the long part of the pattern will be the top that goes across the phylactery and tucks in to close the lid.
- 4). Fold up the sides of the phylactery and glue them in place. Glue the string to the box if you are using a string. Let the glue dry and then put the text in the phylactery and close it.
