No-limit Poker
Definition:
Playing poker no-limit means simply that there are no limits on how much can be bet during each round of play. This is sometimes referred to as "table stakes" and only money and/or chips on the table may be bet. That said, each no-limit game actually has it's own rules and limits. Because the game of poker must be played for something, the game needs an ante to play for.
In draw games (such as low-ball and seven-card draw), each player places a small ante (fractional bet such as 25-cents in a $1-$2 bet game) into the pot before receiving any cards.
In the world's most popular game, Texas Hold'em, the first two players to the left of the button (the dealer spot) put up a blind bet (a small and a large blind, such as $1 and $2) instead of each player putting an ante into the pot.
Typical No-limit Structure
In a standard no-limit Texas Hold'em game there are set limits for the buy-in, both minimum and maximum, as well as for the blinds. The larger the blinds, the higher the minimum buy-in should be. A typical game will call for a minimum buy-in of 25 to 50 times the big blind and a maximum of 100 to 200 times the big blind. If the blinds are $1 and $2, most buy-ins will be in the $100 to $200 range.
Call Blind Games
In a standard $1 and $2 blind Texas Hold'em game each player must call the big blind $2 bet or raise to stay in the hand. If they do not, they must fold. The first raise must be at least double the big blind, $4 in this example. The minimum will be the same after each round, but there is no maximum on subsequent bets or raises - up to all chips or cash in front of a player.
"To Go" or "To Stay' Games
In a game referred to as "to go," the minimum to call pre-flop is more than the big blind. In a standard $2 and $3 blind Texas Hold'em game of this type the minimum to go is $5. The minimum raise is to $10. The $5 minimum will be the same after each round, but there is no maximum on subsequent bets or raises - up to all the chips or cash in front of a player.
