Dog Sympathy Gifts
- Few events rival the intensity of losing a family dog. The bounds of love know no species. Losing your best four-legged friend, like losing a human friend or family member, leaves mourners with deep sadness. Sympathy gifts show support for the loss and honor the life of departed dog.
- Make a contribution to The Humane Society, an animal shelter, a breed rescue or another animal-based non-profit organization in honor of the dog. For a purebred dog, pick a breed rescue group such as Pit Bull rescue or Greyhound rescue. If the dog died of a disease, contribute to research organizations searching for a cure. You can also help a family raise money for a working service dog by donating to their fundraising efforts. Organizations like Autism Service Dogs of America or 4 Paws For Ability can connect you with families working to adopt a service animal.
- Find a favorite photo of the dog, and frame it or, if you have them, frame side-by-side puppy and adult shots. You can take it a step further by writing a favorite memory or story about the animal to accompany the picture. Research online for keepsake companies, and turn the photo into a key chain, mug or T-shirt.
- Create your own living memorial by giving an outdoor plant that blooms or fruits annually such as a butterfly bush or a small tree. The family can bury some or all of the remains beneath the plant to create a living, growing memorial grave site for their dog. Take it a step further by helping to plan a memorial planting and burial service.
- Books that help children cope with pet loss, such as Cynthia Rylant's "Dog Heaven," make a wonderful gift for grieving kids. Consult your local children's bookseller for recommendations.
