How to Qualify for US Citizen Entitlement
- 1). Live in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for a minimum of five years.
- 2). Be physically present in the United States for at least half of the last five years.
- 3). Live in the district or state where you are filing your application for citizenship for at least three months immediately prior to the application.
- 4). Spend no more than a year outside the United States.
- 5). Prove that you are at least 18 years old and of good moral character.
- 6). Prove that you are able to speak, read and write in English.
- 1). Download and print Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website. Download the accompanying instructions and read them carefully before starting the application. Complete the application form in full.
- 2). Collect the documents required to be sent with your application: photocopies of both sides of your Permanent Residence Card, known as a "green card"; two identical color photographs of yourself with your facial features exposed and your name and Alien Registration Number written lightly in pencil on the back of both; and a check or money order for the appropriate application fee and biometrics services fee. Write your Alien Registration Number on the back of your check or money order.
- 3). Download M-477, Document Checklist, from the USCIS website. Read it carefully and collect the additional documents that are relevant to your particular situation.
- 4). Send your application and all supporting documents to the correct USCIS office for your state.
- 5). Wait for a response, which is likely to take several months. Attend your nearest USCIS office for a fingerprint appointment. Attend the office for an interview, during which your English language ability and knowledge of U.S. history and government will be tested. Wait for your results; if all goes well you will receive an appointment for your swearing-in ceremony.
