You have been waiting a couple of weeks for this particular doctors appointment.
This is the one where you will get to see your baby for the first time.
The first ultra sound is a very exciting time and you have been looking forward to it for quite some time.
You lay there on the table chatting with your doctor waiting for your baby to blip on the screen.
Suddenly, your doctor grows quiet or issues a softly spoken "Oh my!" Then ever so casually he asks you if twins run in your family.
Perhaps you catch on immediately or perhaps you actually answer the question before the true reality of his question hits you.
Either way unless twins do run in your family the news is going to be both startling and unexpected to say the least.
So many feelings come over you all at once.
You feel the joy and excitement of having two little angels to love, then the panic hits.
You find yourself wondering how you are ever going to afford to feed and clothe two children at the same time.
Your mind flies to the nursery and you begin to wonder how you are going to fit in two cribs, two dressers and twice the amount of diapers, clothes and toys than you planned for.
You have absolutely no idea where you are going to start.
The first thing you need to do is take a deep breath and calm down.
Take a few days to let the shock wear off and to get used to this incredible change in your life.
The babies are not going to be born tomorrow and you will have time to plan for their arrival.
Once you have given yourself time to get used to the idea, if you are like most parents, you are going to be excited about this new and unexpected turn of events.
You know there will be some tough times ahead but when you consider the miracle that is about to happen you know you and your partner can weather those tough times.
Make a Plan Sit down together and make a plan of those things you are going to need two of, such as a crib.
Decide if you really need two dressers or if you can do with one large one.
Then decide if buying new is really all that important.
Buying secondhand baby furniture can save you a lot in the way of money that can go for more important things like diapers and clothes.
Enlist help Talk to your family and friends and enlist their help.
After all that is what family and friends are there for, to help us in our time of need and you certainly can use them now.
If you have friends that have young children they still may have perfectly good baby clothes stored away that you can use to supplement those new clothes you will need to buy.
They may also have high chairs and other large items you can use now or later.
Having twins may take a little more thought and preparation but once those sweet precious babies arrive you will know it all was worth it.
