- 1). Look for signs that your child is ready to use the potty. She should show interest in the potty and watching others use it. She should also be able to recognize when her diaper is soiled. Other signs include being able to follow simple directions and being able to take her pants on and off.
- 2). Purchase a potty for her to use. Take her with you to the store to help pick out the potty, which can help increase her excitement about using it. Some parents like to purchase multiple potties, keeping one in the bathroom and one in the other room that the child spends much time in, such as the living room.
- 3). Allow your child into the bathroom with you. He should watch how adults use the toilet. As you go, you can make a big deal about how fun it is for you to use the potty.
- 4). Schedule regular times to sit on the potty. For example, you may want to sit him on the potty once an hour. If he goes, cheer him on. If not, don't make a big deal out of it.
- 5). Dress her in clothes that she can easily remove. Use pants with an elastic waist band, dresses or skirts. It can upset her if she has an accident simply because she couldn't get her pants off quickly enough.
- 6). Consider rewards to encourage her to go. For example, you could give her a candy whenever she sits on the potty or create a sticker chart and give her a sticker every time she goes.
