If you're a parent or teacher with small kids, you might want to rethink the name of this game. It's not at all violent to play, but I'm sure you can imagine how revved up a bunch of wee ones would get after hearing, "Now we're going to play Punch Your Lights Out!" In reality, this game from Minute to Win It is pretty silly and loads of fun -- for all ages.

The Goal

In this game you will be throwing bean bags, underhanded, so that they'll hit a series of push lights and turn the lights off.

Unless you want to be a rebel, in which case you'll be trying to turn the lights on. Whatever floats your boat.

Equipment Needed

Some of the supplies you'll need to play this game aren't exactly common (as in found around the house), but they're not difficult to find if you don't mind spending a few dollars on party game supplies. Here's your shopping list:
  • At least six bean bags (though it would be really helpful to have lots more than that)
  • A bucket to hold the bean bags
  • Six push lights (the link is there as an example - use whatever brand or style you like - heck, you could even use these just for giggles)
  • Measuring tape
  • Masking tape or chalk to mark a foul line
  • A one-minute timer or stop watch

Set Up for Punch Your Lights Out

For this game you'll also need a wall that can handle the push lights (they're supposed to come off without leaving marks, but you still probably don't want to mount them on your dining room wall), and a floor surface that can be marked with tape or chalk to create a foul line.

First, place the lights on the wall in a pyramid pattern, with one light at the top, two lights below, and three along the bottom. Leave a bit of space between the lights, and try to keep them around eye level for the average person.

With your measuring tape, measure eight feet out from the wall and mark your foul line. Place the bean bags in the bucket and rest the bucket near the foul line. Turn all of the push lights on. Then get ready to play!

How to Play

To start off with, stand behind the foul line next to the bucket of bean bags. When the timer begins, grab a bag and toss it underhand, trying to hit one of the lights and turn it off. Keep going until all of the lights are off and you win, as long as the timer hasn't run out. You don't have to hit the lights in any particular order but be careful, because if you hit one twice and it ends up back on, you'll have to hit it a third time to turn it off again.

The Rules

The rules for the game are:
  • You may only use one hand to throw the bean bags
  • You may only throw underhanded
  • You may only throw one bean bag at a time
  • If you hit a light twice and it comes back on, you must hit it again to turn it off
  • All six lights must be off when the timer ends in order to win

Tips and Tricks

There really aren't any super secret strategies that you can employ in order to become a Punch Your Lights Out master. Just make sure you only hit each light once to save yourself some time and frustration.

You can make this game easier for younger players (just remember to change the game's title) by using a smaller number of lights and placing the foul line a little closer.
