All professional writers seem to experience this at some stage of their careers.
We're talking about this phenomenon called writer's block which temporarily prevents one from either finishing what was already begun or from starting something new.
Usually, this is because of a lack of the right idea or imagination.
Sometimes, this feeling can prevent one from penning what could turn out to be a good story.
Often, this is due to fear, anxiety, frustration-the reason could be anything, but the feeling is terrible.
However, the good news is that you can overcome this feeling and get back to being a regular writer-one who writes fluidly, day after day.
Here are some time-tested tips to overcome the problem of writer's block: - Get down to the point where you got stuck the previous day: Tackle the problem at hand first thing in the morning.
- Not urgent? If the problem area is not required in a hurry, file it for now until the right solution comes to you.
Now, move on to working on other things.
- Set up a writing plan: First, ignore the fact that you suffer from writer's block.
Believe that you don't and set out time each day just to write.
Even if you can't come up with anything, at some time you will, if you try this everyday.
- Don't punish yourself-it's not your fault: Don't be unduly critical about your problem.
You didn't cause it, so wait it out.
- Make a broad framework: To overcome writer's block, try writing the main points of an article or story.
This will teach you to think in a particular direction.
Then, it's only a matter of fleshing out the points and you've got your story!! - Hit the gym: Do some light exercises and try to activate your mind.
Increase your activity levels and see the effect this has on your writing.
- Consider yourself doing a day's work and do it: If you see yourself as a professional doing a regular day's job, then it's easy for you to fill up pages of a story or article or poem.
You need the tools of imagination, words and style-well, use them and do a day's writing job without complaining.
- Perhaps your mind is tired, so take time off: You've worked hard on a project and you need some time off.
So, take it now and unwind before you get back to work.
- Sit some place else: If you've been working at your desk, now get up and go find another place to write at.
Find a place that's quiet, different, soothing and watch your writing improving and soon, voila, your writer's block will disappear!
