How to Grease Trailer Wheels

    • 1). Lift the trailer with a jack. Slide jack stands beneath the axle or use cinder blocks to raise the trailer off the ground.

    • 2). Remove the lug nuts on the wheels with a lug wrench then slide the wheels off. Replace the lug nuts on each wheel to keep them together.

    • 3). Pry off the dust cap of the center hub with a flat head screwdriver. If necessary, lightly tap the screwdriver with a hammer as you rotate the hub and loosen the cap.

    • 4). Remove the cotter pin on the nut by straightening it with the pliers. If the pin has been straightened and is becoming weak, replace it with a new one.

    • 5). Unscrew the nut. Remove the outer bearing. Use shop rags to catch any grease that falls when you remove the hub assembly from the axle.

    • 6). Clean as much grease as possible from the outer bearing, hub and inner bearing with shop rags and automotive parts cleaner.

    • 7). Inspect the hub and surfaces of the axle and bearings to make sure there is no pitting or damage. If they are damaged, you may need to replace the bearings.

    • 8). Repack the bearings with clean grease. Rub grease into them a glob at a time until it disappears then use the grease gun to add more grease until it begins to come out the other side. Pack them until you can no longer get more grease into the bearings.

    • 9). Reinstall the inner bearing and seal. Place the greased inner bearing onto the axle and seat it snugly into place. Replace the rear seal with a new one. Clean the hub where it will seat with solvent so no grease interferes with the seal. Clean the axle shaft with a shop rag and solvent to remove any excess grease.

Place a large glob of grease on the hub and slide onto the axle. Reinstall the outer bearing, making sure it's seated in place. Replace the nut and tighten by hand. Be sure the hub spins freely. Expose the cotter pin hole and replace the cotter pin.

Replace the dust cap and pump grease into the hub with the grease gun as you turn it. Avoid over-filling the hub. Wipe away any excess and replace the wheel.
