Diabetes: A Life Changer In Malaysia

Three years ago I went to the doctor in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I live here for my whole life now. It is a beautiful and modern city, and I enjoy it very much. The doctor made some blood samples and after a while he said that I had diabetes. Honestly, I was not shocked at all. This is because a lot of people in Malaysia have diabetes. At the moment it is almost 20 percent of the population. That is more than 1.5 million people. How come? So much diabetic patients?

There are a few reasons for this phenomenon. At first, Malaysian people love food. They like to go out for dinner, and they eat a lot. The food that is made in Malaysia contains a lot of sugar and other harmful substances. This can ultimately result in diabetes or obesity. Most people do not know the consequences from our food. That is why we need to educate them. This is something that is happening in small sizes, but it is not good enough. There are also a lot of people who cannot pay the doctor. In that case, they have diabetes and they do not even know it. This can lead to serious problems and injuries. Ultimately, they can even die from not knowing they have diabetes.

The government is already trying to do organize events throughout the country. Those are free to attend, but most people do not go there. Especially outside the cities, it is difficult for the government to reach the population. They do not like the western way of living and want to do it on their own. Some have a doctor in those parts of the city. But, mostly, those doctors have not enough experience or do not have the resources needed. Also diabetes products are different to find in these parts of the country. The Malaysian government also wants to improve this, by sending medicines and diabetes products to the other parts of the country.

Giving medicines to the population is the best solution at the moment. Without medicines people can die any moment when having diabetes type 1. Some do not even know they have it when they die. The community sees it as shock, but then continues living. Without paying attention to the actual facts, that the person had diabetes.

My diabetes is not hurting my feelings. I just need to test my blood sugar and go to the doctor periodically. Actually, I feel quite comfortable with doing that. I want to help other people who have it more difficult. There are a lot of people in Malaysia who need help, I want to be there for them. That is my current goal in life.
