Qualities of Effective Managers

104 10

    Function

    • An effective manager brings all available resources, including human resources, together, and coordinates them into a single effective tool. This newly formed tool is then used to realize an objective in the most efficient manner possible.

    Communication

    • One of your most important qualities as an effective manager is the ability to communicate with team members. Without the ability to understand communications from superiors, and to pass these communications on to your subordinates accurately, you will not be effective. All team members must be able to understand the goal that is to be achieved, and you must have the ability to help each member understand his part in reaching that goal.

    Motivation

    • Not every individual requires the same type of motivation, and as an effective manager you must be able to recognize what motivates people on an individual basis. One individual, for example, may need to be prodded, while another may need a guide.

    Knowledge

    • You must have at least a basic knowledge of the product or service that is being provided and the processes involved in providing that product or service. An important part of being an effective manager includes decision making, and good decisions are based on available and accurate information. Without a basic understanding of what needs to be accomplished and how it is accomplished, effective decision making can be difficult. You must also be knowledgeable of the skills and skill levels of your team members. If you are managing a remodeling project, having your electrician installing the carpets would not be an effective approach.

    Suggestions

    • Effective management does not include ignoring the experience and skills of your fellow team members. Talk to your team members and get them involved in the decision-making process, and they will take a more active and responsible role in completing the mission.
While the ability to influence subordinates is often considered to be the primary quality of an effective manager, having the ability to influence your superiors can be an important trait as well.

    Benefits

    • As an effective manager you will reduce waste, streamline processes and improve the quality of your product or service by boosting the morale of the people around you. Your group will work together as an efficient team, bringing increased productivity and greater customer satisfaction to the organization that you represent.
