Ok, so you've made your mind up that you need a new shed, or garage, and as you don't want to spend a fortune on it you've decided to build it yourself. The next question that you are going to ask your self is, where do I start?

As with most tasks that you undertake, you will need to make some form of action plan to work to, so that you avoid wasting time and money. Firstly, you should get yourself a set of shed plans. These are readily available on the internet for any outdoor building that you have chosen. On certain websites you will find free shed plans on offer. These free plans may not cover the exact design, shape and size of your desired project but what they will do is to give you a good insight into what shed building plans look like and what they include.

Once you know what size and purpose your shed or garage will be used for, you can then look for a set of plans that meet all of your criteria, including the design and type of material to be used.

Once you have familiarised yourself with a set of plans you can then satisfy yourself that you are happy to have a go and build the shed on your own. A good set of shed plans should have step by step instructions to guide you through the job from start to finish. Also, the plans will let you know which materials your project requires and what quantities you will need. This will assist you in estimating the total cost of your project and will enable you to set a budget.

Before you start building make sure that you have chosen the right site for it, as it will be difficult to move it at a later date. Likewise, make sure that you have picked the correct size, as the last thing that you want is to have to build another shed at a later date once you have found that you have outgrown it.

The main thing to do is to sit down at the outset, get hold of some shed plans and make a list of how you will carry out your building project, starting off with the foundations and finishing with the roof, making a note of each stage of the build. By spending a small amount of time with the planning of your project, you will save a lot of time and trouble, not to mention cash, at the end of the job.
