How to Crimp a Cat 5 Cable End
- 1). Strip four inches of the outer insulating jacket off of the end of your Cat 5 cable. This will expose the eight inner conductors. Do not remove or damage the insulating covers on the individual conducting wires.
- 2). Separate the individual conducting wires. The conductors are twisted in color-coded pairs. Untwist the full length of each pair until you reach the outer insulating jacket.
- 3). Smooth the wires by drawing them between your thumb and forefinger several times. Arrange them, from left to right in the following order: white/orange, orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown, brown.
- 4). Keep the conductors in order and clip them evenly 1/2-inch from the outer insulating jacket with a pair of electrician's scissors.
- 5). Insert the conductors into an RJ45 plug. Hold the plug with the tab facing away from you. Slide the conductors into the open end of the plug. Do not allow the wires to become crossed or doubled up in the plug's interior slots.
- 6). Insert the RJ45 plug into the crimping tool.
- 7). Slide the outer insulating jacket as far as possible into the RJ45 plug. The insulating jacket provides strain relief once the crimp is made.
- 8). Squeeze the crimping tool firmly until it is completely shut. A partial crimp will result in a poor or incomplete connection.
- 9). Open the crimping tool and remove the wire and plug.
