The Bottom Line

Dawn makes moving contacts between the address books of most Windows email programs a snap. If you switch email clients and cannot easily export or import the address books, Dawn most probably can, retaining most additional info and even groups. It's a pity Dawn does not interact with online address books in the same easy manner.

Guide Review - Dawn 5.4 - Email Address Book Converter

Switching email programs can be fun in the way trying something new almost invariably is, and certainly your new program is better than the old, so the step was a good one.

The reason why you need to come up with reasons to justify the switch is now also painfully obvious, of course: getting your contacts out of the old program and into the new is a pain, if it is at all.

Looks like you'll have to retype every single name and address. Make that "looked like". Dawn not only makes moving contacts easy, it also supports most email programs. The list includes Outlook Express, Outlook, Mozilla, Mozilla Thunderbird, Juno, Pegasus Mail, Eudora and Pine. For programs not directly supported, Dawn offers comma-separated (CSV) text files.

Unfortunately, Dawn does not work with AOL, for example. It's also a pity that Dawn cannot talk directly to web-based email services such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail. CSV files do often work for these, though.

If you switch between two email programs recognized by Dawn directly, a wizard walks you through the simple steps (which essentially amount to choosing the programs). Alternatively, you can open, view and edit address books in Dawn before exporting them. It's even possible to collect and merge contacts from various programs.
