How to Rent a Car One-Way
- 1). Plan ahead. If the destination and travel date is known in advance, it is easier to find a relatively inexpensive rate by comparing rental companies and contacting them about any specials or coupons they may have available at different times. Use specialty travel sites like Orbitz or Travelocity to compare companies.
- 2). Be open to different types of vehicles. While a large SUV may be desired, it greatly limits the options available. Sedans and small cars are more common in the rental world and widens the options to compare.
- 3). Be willing to change the destination point. If traveling to a small town, there are far fewer rental companies available for drop-off. But a nearby city, particularly one with a large airport, has far more options and therefore the opportunity to find a cheaper rate.
- 4). Book with the company that best suits your schedule and budget. Read the contract before signing anything to prevent being charged hidden fees. If you are currently an insured driver, you may not need to purchase the optional insurance on a rental car. Check with the rental company to learn their terms.
- 5). Pick up your rental car. For your peace of mind and pocketbook, go over the vehicle with an agent and note any pre-existing damages so you cannot be blamed for them later. Double check the terms of the rental agreement.
- 6). Drop off the car at the designated spot. Try to arrive when the location is staffed so you can check it in with an agent and avoid any extra fees for damages or late drop-off.
