Like language itself, social networks are constantly evolving through use.
As with 'in' words and phrases, a platform's popularity is driven by the people who use it.
If you were to ask a group of people which site they preferred to use, you would receive various answers based on personal choice.
But, working at a social media agency, I am intrigued by the popularity of networks and the choice there is out there.
With the announcement that microblogging site rstatus.
us
has recently been set up as an alternative to Twitter, there's a new kid on the block.
Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare and LinkedIn are but a few of the most popular social media sites that have established their place and level of popularity.
Much was made of Twitter's fifth birthday recently, LinkedIn celebrated achieving 100 million members, Foursquare has hit 8 million users and Facebook now has over 30 million registered UK users.
These examples represent the successful, go-to platforms for many.
For some, they are the only networks of choice for others, nauseating and run of the mill.
So it is refreshing that rstatus.
us
should offer an alternative microblogging medium.
According to founder Steve Klabnik, rstatus.
us
was set up in response to Twitter's announcement that they were changing their terms of service.
In short, they do not want additional third party interfaces (like TweetDeck) being developed.
The aim of rstatus.
us
is to provide a fair and transparent service that preserves users' autonomy.
In particular, it is built on free softwaremaking it Open Data.
Their ethos is to allow people to take control of their own social networking.
Surely this approach is to be applauded as upholding the spirit of freedom will appeal to many.
The launch comes in the wake of a decline in popularity for some other social media platforms, however, so how will rstatus.
us fare?MySpace has lost around 10 million unique users between January and February this year and the diminishing value of Bebo has been widely reported.
Although these sites are not directly comparable, it still highlights the fluctuations social network platforms can experience.
Following the launch, Klabnik says that there is still much development to be carried out to the site and there are big plans ahead.
Also, for those early adopters looking to the future, the kudos associated with predicting the next big thing, getting on-board and being ahead of the curve is huge.
It has been proven time and again, things can grow quickly in the world of social media and rstatus.
us
is poised to take off.
As Darwin posited, the ultimate outcome will be decided by the survival of the fittest.
Perhaps we will not be celebrating Twitter's tenth birthday with as much verve as we did its fifth.
The fact remains that people will make their own choices about which social network they use, but the very fact that there is a choice is heartening and we should welcome the launch of rstatus.
us
with open arms.
