Vincent Van Gogh - Biography
Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland, on March 30, 1853.
His life was rather impressive, if not relatively short, but one that had a great impact on the world of art.
He was a great painter and artists and most of his works are considered masterpieces.
What is depressingly-interesting about Vincent Van Gogh's body of work, is that he actually only sold one painting! This goes to show that money is not everything and that most of his success, came after death.
Vincent's Father, was a Protestant minister and Van Gogh had five other siblings, three daughters and two other brothers.
By being brought up in a religious family, Vincent was extremely emotional but absent of the very human emotion, which is almost always required, of a successful individual, self-confidence.
This plays into the testament of how Vincent overcame so many obstacles and became a successful and one of the greatest artists, of all time.
He is not the usual customary 'run-of-the-mill' artist that has trained since birth and actually started working as an artist at age 16.
By the time he was 21 he had created some of the most masterful works of art known to man.
In 1886 Van Gogh moved to Paris and started a new life with his brother Theo.
Some of the other artists that he met, while in Paris, were Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat, Pissarro and the Gauguin.
In 1888 he decided to move to Arles in the South of France, and even the famous artist and friend Gauguin, joined him in his transition and relocation.
Gauguin was very bad for Van Gogh and this was demonstrated in his works during that time they worked together.
The initial goal was that they were going to open an artist colony in the South of France but the health, especially the mental health, of Van Gogh, was certainly not stable enough to follow this pursuit.
It was during this time, with Gauguin, that Vincent mutilated his own ear.
There was one good aspect that came out of his time with Gauguin and that was where he painted the 'Sun Flowers' series.
This was the time of Van Gogh's darkest periods, and is the time that he became a patient in Saint-Remy.
As a patient of St.
Remy Sanatorium, Van Gogh continued to paint and actually created some of his best works in this location and mental health condition.
It was not the artistic pursuits that were getting the best of him it was his own mind as he started to go more and more insane.
He created 2000 pieces of art, 900 paintings and 1100 sketches and pencil drawings.
Of those entire great works only one was sold for profit.
While not appreciated in his lifetime, Vincent Van Gogh would be recalled in such splendor as one of the greatest artist that ever lived and this was something that no one could take away from the great artist even in death.
He died July 29, 1890.
