Champions League - Real Madrid Beat Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur are effectively out of the Champions League after falling to a 4-0 defeat against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu Stadium, in the first leg of their quarter final game.
Tottenham who are enjoying their inaugural season in the Champions League have defied many critics by progressing so far in the competition and by playing so well.
The Tottenham dream of progressing to the semi finals of the competition started to evaporate after only four minutes, as nemesis Emmanuel Adebayor, who has now scored nine goals in his last nine appearances against Tottenham, scored with a header after jumping above Jermaine Jenas.
After 14 minutes, the dream was starting to turn into a nightmare, Peter Crouch, who had already been booked for a crude challenge on Sergio Ramos, was shown a second yellow card and then the mandatory red for another late tackle, and the difficult task on taking any kind of result away from the Bernabéu was now looking like an impossibility.
after being reduced to ten men.
Already shaken even before the kick off Tottenham were without Aaron Lennon who withdrew from the squad at the last minute through illness, Spurs were a shadow of the team who had finished top of their qualifying group which include Inter Milan and they had beaten AC Milan in the last round of the competition.
Spurs rarely threatened and only had four shots in the whole of the ninety minutes compared with 36 from Madrid, while the home side also dominated possession from the outset and pressurised the Tottenham defence with wave after wave of attack.
The outstanding Gareth Bale remained a threat for the visitors on the break but opportunities were few and far between, but Sours should take credit for the resolute defending which kept the score at a respectable 1-0 until half time.
The second half proved to be a Real Madrid master class and Adebayor was on hand again to score a second goal of the night, as he found unmarked in the penalty area on 57 minutes to head the ball over Gomes in the Tottenham goal.
Di Maria scored the third after 72 minutes, and the extra space given to Real allowed Ronaldo to run riot and he finally scored himself on 87 minutes to complete the 4-0 score line.
As Spurs were unable to score an away goal they now have the odds stacked against them progressing to the semi final stages of the competition, but there have been great comebacks in this competition before just ask Liverpool fans, all though to turn this game around would require one of the most memorable comebacks of all time.
