    Fur or Dander

    • Many people believe that people are allergic to dog hair or fur. People are actually allergic to the dander (flakes of dead skin). Whether a dog has long or short fur will not make a difference.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of dog dander allergies include coughing, wheezing, itchy eyes, runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing. Some people will have skin reactions, like hives.

    Allergy Control

    • The best way to control allergies is to avoid contact with dogs or people who own dogs since the dander can cling to them. This is not always practical or realistic. Keeping the house clean, using an air filter, and getting rid of carpet will help keep allergens at bay.

    Medications

    • There are many medications which can help allergy sufferers. Antihistamines are available OTC or by prescription; they block the effect allergen trigger. Decongestants reduce nasal swelling and congestion. There are also prescription nasal steroid sprays.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects depend on the type of medication taken. Antihistamines typically produce side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth and nose, and the inability to concentrate. Some decongestant side effects are insomnia, elevated blood pressure, and headache. Nasal steroids side effects include headaches, insomnia, and nasal septum perforation.
